<image:caption>“It’s Really About the Water” emerald darner dragonfly & a dozen critters hidden in the circle Dragonflies are amazing insects that have been around for at least 300 million years. There are fossils of dragonflys with a wingspan of almost 2 1/2 feet. They are carnivores so that size is concerning! Now, dragonflies consume mosquito larvae, small fish and tadpoles in the aquatic nymph stage and later, as adults, they devour countless insects. Another very common name for them is “mosquito hawk” and we are grateful! When you’re done admiring the stunning dragonfly this piece becomes a treasure hunt. A dozen creatures are hidden in the pencil work in the bottom circle. Water is necessary to life and all these creatures have been drawn to waters edge. Some are easy to find and others very small and difficult. It’s an entertaining exercise in paying close attention and both adults and kids enjoy the test. The eyes of this male dragonfly are indeed dazzling! It’s a compound eye made up of numerous individual eyes that work together but the male swamp darner’s eyes have swirling blue and white patterns that seem impossible and surreal! Delicate pencil work defines every veined leaf and a careful use of green pencil breathes gentle color into the foliage. The dragonfly’s brilliant blue and red markings glow against the muted greens, creating a striking focal point within this quiet and carefully observed study. It’s a beautiful moth and especially striking because of its size having a wingspan as large as six inches. Hickory, walnut and sumac are favorite foods in the caterpillar stage but silk moths don’t have a mouth in the adult stage. They live briefly from the fat stored in their bodies and are only concerned with reproduction. The caterpillar is a scary sight! Called a hickory horned devil reaching 5-6 inches long and nearly as plump as a hot dog. You’ll need to look that guy up to see a photo. As a caterpillar it feeds on a wide range of broad-leaved trees and shrubs. Here, it’s shown with sweet gum, a common but not very popular tree. I once knew a charming ol’ fella who gathered these prickly seed balls, sprayed them white and then told Ozark tourists “These are porcupine eggs and no wonder the critters are going extinct!” Archival giclee signed and numbered limited edition (500) from a gouache and pencil original</image:caption>

Its wing span can reach almost 7 inches and has many subspecies ranging from southern Canada into South America. The caterpillar feeds on a variety of plants including sassafras and the energy it stores as a caterpillar completely sustains the moth in that short life stage. The moth is nocturnal but especially drawn to lights which is causing a concerning decline in the population. Warm gouache layers capture both the bee’s velvety texture and translucent wings while pencil and pastel give the glow of honey. Meanwhile, he’s getting the “Cold Shoulder” from his lady. Give them a little time and they will work it out. Green-winged teal are north America’s smallest dabbling duck inhabiting shallow wetlands like this setting. I had taxidermied birds to work from and my husband, David Curles, waded out into the lake to photograph this tangle of water iris for me. While he was out there it began to rain and that gave me a wonderful texture in the water. I really like doing tangles and this pencil work was certainly a challenge! <image:caption>“A Resting Place” Canada Geese Canada geese are handsome and powerful birds that form life-long bonds with their mates. Males are very protective of their nesting mate and their young. More than that, they maintain extended families and grandparents help raise the young. Their population was in trouble back in the 1980’s but they have recovered and are now plentiful. This piece took all the painting time I had for an entire year. The original is large - 21” x 34”. The birds are in gouache and the rest in black and a bit of green colored pencil. I knew how I wanted the main roots to flow and searched river banks for a reference but couldn’t find what I wanted. As a result, this is all out of my head. You’ll find ferns, oak leaves, may apples and poison ivy tucked into the pencil work. Again, I love doing tangles! Now and then they would stop and in a moment one would peek around to see if the other was still there. I was spring and we think this was courtship. The performance lasted a good half hour before they flew off for privacy. It was wonderful! Signed and numbered limited edition giclee (500) from a gouache & pencil original</image:caption>

<image:caption>“Family Planning” Red-Cockaded Woodpeckers This is an endangered woodpecker and naturalists are working hard to increase its range and population. It was once common in the southern forests but depends on mature long-leafed pines for nesting. Those forests were harvested affecting the woodpecker’s population. The long-leafed pine is susceptible to red heart fungus giving the tree a soft center inside a hard outer shell. Perfect for excavating a nest cavity. The bird also has a unique way of protecting its nest. It’s the only woodpecker that carves its nest from a live pine and it drills holes around the opening. Resin seeps from those holes creating a sticky barrier that repels climbing predators. Clever! <image:caption>““The Ivory-billed Woodpecker - The Ghost Bird” The ivory-billed woodpecker was once the largest woodpecker in North America, an imposing and magnificent bird of the deep southern forests. With its striking black-and-white plumage and distinctive ivory-colored bill, it earned the nickname “The Lord God Bird,” a name whispered in awe by those fortunate enough to glimpse it. Historically, it inhabited the vast bottomland swamps and old-growth hardwood forests of the southeastern United States, where towering cypress and ancient trees provided both food and nesting sites. As logging reshaped those wild landscapes in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the bird’s habitat disappeared, and so did confirmed sightings. Today, the ivory-billed woodpecker exists in a space between memory and mystery. Reports and fleeting encounters continue to surface, yet none have been supported by clear, indisputable photographic evidence. Whether it survives in some remote stretch of southern swamp or has quietly slipped into extinction remains one of the greatest and most poignant questions in the bird world — a symbol of both hope and loss in America’s natural history. You can google it for more information. The search for a surviving population continues and a “maybe sighting” was in Arkansas not ago. They prefer open country, coastlines and mountains but have adapted to cities and now nest on skyscrapers. I live in the woods but had one at the small pond in my backyard. Look for the black markings on their faces for a quick identification. The large branches in the background are from a photo I took along the Buffalo River in Arkansas. I was really intrigued by the way the feathers layer along the wings and down the owl’s back. Beautiful soft feathers but each very distinct. An owl’s feathers don’t have hard edges. The edges are fringed and that difference gives them a silent flight. The barn owl has a heart shaped white disk for a face and that shape traps and funnels sound. Their hearing is exceptional! They can hear a mouse’s heartbeat in a thirty square foot room. They are found in deserts, grasslands, forests, fields and even urban areas and nest in barns, tree hollows and nest boxes. I took the photo and thirty years went by before I got to his portrait. He has a really serious look and seems not happy about our presence. He has been disturbed and is now fluffed out and alert. The great horned owl is North America’s most common owl and they have amazing night vision. This owl is a visual hunter. The “horns” aren’t horns at all but tufts of feathers and they have nothing to do with the owl’s ears but the tufts are a good indicator of the owls mood. Like dogs, the owl can flatten them if he feels threatened. Happy and those tuft stand up and become the horns he’s named for. So, I guess this fella is just shaking loose his magnificent feathers and not aggravated after all! With extremely good hearing and night vision he watches, swooping down from a high perch to snag a meal with those big talons. When clenched, the talons require a force of 28 pounds to open…this is a strong predator! They don’t work on a nest very much - just use the old nest of another large bird like a hawk, eagle or heron and add a few feathers. The female incubates the eggs but they both feed the owlets. Populating a big range they are found through out the U.S., most of Canada, all of Central America and parts of South America. In dim light they can see 100 times better than humans. Their eyes are not a sphere but are shaped like cylinders and that helps them see in the dark. But, the tube like shape of their eyes prevents them from rotating in the sockets. Instead, their necks have an extra vertebrae that enables them to turn their heads up to 270 degrees around. When soaring they travel at about 40 mph and in a dive they can reach 120 mph. This big hawk is can weigh as much as 3.5 lbs with a wingspan of 57 inches. They mate for life taking a new mate only if the original mate dies. They are easily trained hunters and often used for falconry. They are also long-lived and disease resistant so a falconer can have a trained bird for many years. The hawk won’t bring the prey back to the falconer though. The falconer has to find the hawk and trade a bit of meat for the prey. A fun fact, red-tailed hawks have a two or three second, hoarse, rasping scream similar to a steam whistle. Hollywood frequently substitutes a red-tail’s call for an eagle because the eagle’s call isn’t nearly as impressive. When I was a youngster in Kansas City I found a just-fledged jay in the yard, picked it up and marveled at the fragile life in my hands. That’s one of the memories that I believe led me to focus on birds. Blue jays often act as sentinels for birds and small creatures. They loudly warn of predators in the neighborhood causing the small birds to flee bird feeders and little critters to dive for their holes. They can even be aggressive towards those predators driving them away. Jays are part of the very smart corvid family which includes the crows, ravens and mockingbirds. Set against a light, open background, the piece feels calm and reflective. The scene is a quiet celebration of companionship and reminder of everyday love. Two mockingbirds move through the tangle—one perched with a berry in his beak, the other mid-flight—while a grasshopper, garden spider, and ladybugs secretly share the scene. The mockingbird perched in the brambles has indulged in so many berries that purple juice stains his chest giving the piece it’s title.. Meticulous work defines each leaf and thorn, while vivid gouache brings depth and color to the glossy fruit and soft gray plumage, celebrating summer’s sweet abundance. I start with triangles and just keep breaking them into more and more pieces. Then light and dark gives the illusion of depth. I enjoy the challenge! Red-winged blackbirds are seriously territorial especially during breeding season. This one is guarding his mates nest and will take on any perceived predator including a human! Each bird in this fantasy displays its own distinct posture and personality with the meadow lark taking charge. Of course, the wren has something to say about who is the proper chairman and the blue jay is ready to put the wren in his place. I lived in Eureka Springs, Arkansas when I painted this one and the old bits of people junk came from places where houses used to be in that old victorian town. I had friends who raised a wild bunny on their screened in porch and was used to people and I took photos of their rabbit for reference. Look closely, there are so many details in this! This one started with just the pine cone and me messing around for fun. The cone turned out so nicely, I went to the woods to gather weedy things and found a stray marble and a bit of tea cup. The piece needed a small bit of animal life, hence a mouse. They all start in different ways and ya just have to go with the flow!
