"Homeward Bound" - great blue heron

Though I love the long lines of a great blue heron the real subject here is that magnificent wing. While standing quietly they present such a slender silhouette but when they unfold those long, long wings and take flight it’s a six foot wing span with head tucked back and legs and feet trailing behind. I love to see them in flight!

Behind this heron is an old sycamore tree whose roots have been exposed by the river. If you’'ll look closely there are a few critters and a small frog that call the place home.
