This is the Holy Grail to bird watchers. A woodpecker larger than a pileated and so flashy! He may or may not be extinct as sightings still occur deep in the southern hardwood forests. If the researchers ever manage a definite identification they aren’t going to tell the public any time soon. I’m a believer! He’s still out there!
